The Light of Chorad
Joan Dolamore
Some lights are given. Others are kept.
The Light of Chorad
When the Light of Chorad, the source of the warriors’ power is stolen, Quan, age twelve, is chosen for a journey that could decide the fate of his people. He’s curious. Brave. Unprepared in all the ways that matter.
Traveling with him is Dalmeh, a 14-year-old warrior civilian: she is highly trained, fiercely loyal, and sworn to protect her own. And then there’s BakBak, a lavender-furred creature called a Mootz with bright yellow eyes, a red nose, and long upright ears. They think he’s only an animal. They are wrong.
Across hostile territory ruled by a ruthless queen who has imprisoned her own brother, the trio must evade elite warriors, trust unexpected allies, and face dangers that test more than skill they test judgment. With help from a mysterious shapeshifter and the imprisoned king himself, Quan must reclaim the Light before war becomes inevitable.

Quan isn’t a perfect hero, which makes him feel real. I liked watching him make mistakes, learn, and grow along the way. Dalmeh’s protective nature and BakBak’s quirks add depth and humor. The enemy lands feel dangerous but believable. Every encounter moves the story forward in exciting ways. I finished the book smiling and inspired.

I couldn’t put this down once Quan set off on his journey. The dangers in enemy territory feel real, and every challenge shapes him in a believable way. Dalmeh and BakBak add heart and humor to the story. The tension builds naturally without ever feeling forced. By the end, I was cheering for them the whole way.

I picked this up expecting a simple fantasy adventure and ended up with something much more thoughtful. Joan Dolamore does a wonderful job showing Quan’s growth without rushing it. The journey feels dangerous, but also purposeful, like every challenge is shaping him. I especially liked how the quest itself is revealed to be a test. It made the ending feel earned rather than flashy.

I expected a simple fantasy quest, but this story has so much heart. Quan’s bravery and curiosity make him easy to root for. The obstacles and unexpected allies give the story real stakes. It’s fun, exciting, and surprisingly thoughtful.

I picked this up looking for a light fantasy and got something more meaningful. Dolamore writes with clarity and warmth. The story stays imaginative while still teaching quiet lessons about growth. I’d definitely read more set in this world.

Quan’s journey isn’t just about recovering the Light; it’s about discovering who he is. Each obstacle tests him in different ways, and the lessons feel earned. Dalmeh and BakBak add depth, humor, and heart to the adventure. The enemy territory feels dangerous without overwhelming the story. I appreciated how clever and thoughtful the challenges were.

The story is exciting, but it’s also full of heart. Watching Quan grow while navigating danger made the adventure meaningful. The mix of unexpected allies and clever twists kept me turning pages. I finished it wanting to dive right back into this world.

What stood out to me was how believable Quan’s growth felt. Joan E. Dolamore doesn’t turn him into a hero overnight. He learns through fear, mistakes, and observation. The idea that the quest itself is a test was handled really well. It made his success feel meaningful.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.
